A tessellation is the covering of a plane using one or more geometric shapes, called tiles, with no overlaps and no gaps. Such geometric patterns are very common among Islamic art since ancient time. Some digital artists consider such
constructions in effect algorithms, making Islamic geometric patterns the forerunners of modern algorithmic art. One can extend this concept to higher dimensions through a variety of geometries in mathematics. This course is designed for gifted students who are interested in mathematics, geometric design, Islamic culture and information technology. Contents of this course include periodic and a-period (Penrose) tiling as well as the basics of Escher artworks. The instructor will guide the students to learn while doing, so they could master these complicated tessellation techniques. The course will focus on enhancing the students’ artistic and logical senses as well as their creative and design ability.
